John Lowell has been performing in the Mountain West for more than 45 years as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, and his smooth voice is heard on many albums, including 19 he's released. He's toured the world with his bands Kane's River, Wheel Hoss, Deep River, Growling Old Men, Coppo Kaerner & Lowell, and the John Lowell Band.
In December of 2024 he was awarded the Montana Governor's Arts Award. This award represents the highest honor that Montana bestows on artists that work in the literary, visual, or performing arts. In November of 2024, the International Western Music Association named him Songwriter of the Year, and his most recent recording - Snow On The Wineglass (western songs, almost all original) - was named Album of the Year. His song "Angus MacKenzie" was named Working Cowboy Song of the Year by the IWMA in 2022.
In 2021, Lowell was the Grand Prize Winner in the Hazel Dickens Songwriting Contest (a national songwriting contest) for his song "Richmond," and in 2025 he won second place in the same contest for his song "Times Are Getting Harder Everyday."
John teaches at the Sore Fingers music camp in the UK, the Montana Fiddle Camp, and the Targhee Music Camp, among many others. John and his wife Joanne Gardner Lowell live in Livingston, Montana where they produce musical events.
